Project Description

East Spruce Design / Build, Aurora Displays, and NCC East 40 teamed up with Community Bike Works to design and build a compost solution at their Keck Park Garden in Allentown. With the high volume of produce donated and grown for the East Side Food Pantry, they needed a compost solution to meet their growing food waste demands.

Combining our love for bikes and fresh food, we crafted a compost system that’s as eco-friendly as it is efficient. The 3-bay compost system utilizes spare bicycle parts and discarded pallets (the bike frames create a hinged gate at each end). Our design allows for easy daily use and seasonal maintenance. Students and volunteers can load food scraps, unload compost, and swap out pallets without breaking a sweat. We had a lot of fun designing around the spare bike parts and using found materials, proving that sustainability and ingenuity make the perfect tandem!
